When it comes to social media marketing, businesses should always use research and demographics to decide on the best platforms for their products, services, and target market. When deciding between Twitter and Pinterest, there is a lot of information that can be gathered; however, without having a particular business in mind, I believe Twitter is the better choice.
Twitter is about eleven years old now. Originally it was created as an online short messaging service, or text based application. It’s form of micro-blogging has garnered over 300 million active monthly users (Newberry, 2016). The platform is used by many ages and both genders. Moreover, Twitter is a platform primed for global conversations. As of 2016, eighty-three percent of world leaders are active on Twitter(Smith, 2017a). Also, only twenty-one percent of active users are Americans (Smith, 2017a).
Many may find it hard to express their ideas in 140 characters or less. However, time has shown that Twitter is an enjoyable platform for millions of people.
Pinterest is about seven years old now. The platform was built to be a virtual pin board. Early adapters used it for do it yourself projects and weddings. During its seven years, it has only gained around 175 million users of which 150 million are active monthly (Russell, 2017). Additionally, Eighty-five percent of users are female (Smith, 2017b). Regarding age, currently, most Pinterest users are younger than 29 years old with 36% between 18 and 29 years old.
Winner
Twitter is a better choice for most businesses because it is used by both genders and a wider age range. I know both platforms offer insights for business users. However, I am not acquainted with them at this time. Pinterest is a great option for businesses who’s target market fall within the mentioned demographics. Unfortunately, it is not as close to a one-size fits all solution as Twitter is.
